Q: www.volksbund.de: Kriegsgräberstätten hier Metz Mit der Eingliederung eines Teiles von Lothringen einschließlich der Stadt Metz in das Deutsche Reich, wurde die Festung eine der größten Garnisonen in Deutschland. Für die bis zur Rückgliederung an Frankreich im Jahre 1918 in Metz stationierten Soldaten und Angehörigen der Militärverwaltung sowie deren Familien, entstand nach 1871 für die aus diesem Personenkreis Verstorbenen der Garnisonsfriedhof. Mit Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges wurde Metz Hauptnachschubbasis und zentraler Standort vieler Lazarette. Die ihren Verwundungen erlegenen deutschen und französischen Soldaten sowie die in Metz und Umgebung in der Kriegsgefangenschaft an Krankheiten oder infolge von Unfällen gestorbenen Soldaten fremder Heere fanden im Gelände des Garnisonsfriedhofes ebenfalls ihre letzte Ruhestätte. Während der Schlacht um Verdun vom Februar 1916 bis November 1917 sind zahlreiche Schwerverwundete nach Metz transportiert worden und hier im Lazarett gestorben.Im Jahre 1965 erfolgte im beiderseitigen Einvernehmen die Überführung der in Friedenszeiten gestorbenen und auf dem Garnisonsfriedhof beigesetzten Soldaten und Zivilpersonen auf den benachbarten Zivilfriedhof, da diese Toten nicht unter die Bestimmungen des internationalen Völkerrechts Fortdauerndes Ruherecht fallen.
